Alan Aderem, Ph.D., President
Aderem has studied the interface between the innate and adaptive immune system for more than twenty-five years. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and has led laboratories at The Rockefeller University and the University of Washington. In 2000, Aderem co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology with Drs. Leroy Hood and Ruedi Aebersold. Aderem joined Seattle BioMed as director in 2011, and became Seattle BioMed President in 2012. Working alongside fellow Institute leadership, Aderem is integrating a systems biology approach to Seattle BioMed’s global infectious disease research.

John Aitchison, Ph.D., Director of Integrative Biology
Aitchison is a systems biology pioneer who brings expertise in cellular systems biology to Seattle BioMed's global infectious disease research. Aitchison received his Ph.D. from McMaster University, and he has worked alongside Alan Aderem for many years as the former Associate Director of the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB). Aitchison joined Seattle BioMed in 2011. While his primary role here is to direct integrative biology, he also retains a position at ISB to further develop collaborative research projects between the two institutes.

Tom Blackwell, Director of Information Technology
Blackwell has more than 20 years experience in IT operations, network architecture, applications development and telecommunications. With a master's degree in information systems, he oversees Seattle BioMed’s information technology infrastructure and future directions and is an active member of BRIITE (Biomedical Research Institutions Information Technology Exchange).

Karen Blöchlinger, Ph.D., General Counsel
Before going to law school, Blöchlinger was a scientific researcher studying the development of the nervous system using fruit flies as a model system. After law school, she worked as the intellectual property law firm Christensen O'Conner Johnson & Kindness before joining Seattle BioMed as patent counsel.

Theresa Britschgi, Director of BioQuest
Britschgi joined Seattle BioMed in 2004 as the director of BioQuest, Seattle BioMed's science education outreach program. As active member of the local science education outreach community, she is a 12-year veteran of the biotechnology/ pharmaceutical industry with an established publication and patent record in the fields of functional mammalian genomics and molecular diagnostics.

Randy Hassler, Chief Operations Officer
Hassler brings more than 25 years of successful biopharmaceutical executive leadership to his position at Seattle BioMed, including 12 years of increasing responsibility at Amgen, where he retired from his position as Vice President of Facility Operations. Hassler oversees the key functions of finance, facilities, information technology and human resources, all of which are vital to the success of Seattle BioMed's science.

Kent Irwin, Director, Operations & Facilities
Irwin offers more than 20 years of experience in facility operations, repair and maintenance, including an extensive background in a biomedical laboratory environment. He oversees all facilities, environmental health and safety operations at Seattle BioMed.

Eileen Murphy, Director of Program Management
Murphy is a career professional in program management for both for-profit and not-for-profit companies in the biomedical sector. At Seattle BioMed, Murphy manages cross functional teams and works collaboratively with Institute scientists and staff to advance research projects and achieve business objectives. Murphy holds a BS degree in microbiology from the University of Washington.

Marilyn Parsons, Ph.D., Director of Professional Development
With a long record of scientific achievement in parasitology, Parsons heads her own independent area of research in the study of parasitic diseases. Training and education have also been longtime interests of Parsons. She leads Seattle BioMed's professional development programs, ranging from educational experiences for high school students to career development for graduate students and postdoctoral scientsts to international training programs.

Lee Schoentrup, Director of Communications
With more than 15 years of communications experience, Schoentrup has worked in such diverse industries as health care and software development, as well as non-profit organizations. She oversees Seattle BioMed''s communications efforts, including events, marketing, public relations and publications. Schoentrup is an instructor in the University of Washington's Extension Program, where she teaches a course in public relations writing.

Ken Stuart, Ph.D., President Emeritus & Founder
A world-renowned scientist recognized for his revolutionary discoveries, Stuart founded Seattle BioMed in 1976. At Seattle BioMed, Stuart heads up his own research laboratory while fulfilling broad institute-building roles.

Jeanine Willis, Director of Human Resources
Willis brings 20 years of human resources leadership experience in various fields including high tech, manufacturing and healthcare. She comes to Seattle BioMed after two years as HR director at Attachmate Corp. Prior to that, she worked in HR leadership roles at Oberto Sausage Co., and Muzak LLC. Willis has served the non-profit community through volunteering, fundraising and board roles.

Lynn Zimmerman, Director of Finance
Zimmerman comes to Seattle BioMed from Talaris Research Institute. Prior to Talaris, Zimmerman was Vice President at the Washington Health Foundation. She's also worked at Group Health Cooperative and Harborview Medical Center. She holds a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and a master's degree in health administration from the University of Washington. She is a member of the Seattle Rotary Club.
